Also characters age pretty fast in the series so Maomao is 18-19 by the end of the season. You can clearly see it from one of the characters being pregnant in the beginning and now her kid becoming a toddler and and the same character being pregnant again

Giveing some points to the emperor here, Lady Lishu is a consort in name only, He won't touch her because of her age. Given the time period He seems to have decided that 17 is the age of an adult. I don't think he's ever done anything with anyone younger then that, maybe with Lady Abuo But that would have been when they were both teenagers and roughly the same age They were also friends. He's problematic from our standards, But given the time he seen as respectful in that time period. Something tells me if he was in the modern times he wouldn't touch anyone under Legal age. Spoilers- Lady Lishu is only a concert because The previous emperor liked children. The emperor's own mother was only 10 when she gave birth to him She almost died in the process. Lady Lishu's family kind of sold her to the previous emperor to gain favor when she was literally A toddler. But luckily He was pretty old at that point and Lady Abuo and the emperor were able to protect her. Sadly there were many girls They weren't able to protect. The reason Lady Lishu is still an consort is because it's the only way the emperor can protect her from her family. As long as she's there, they can't sell her off again. :(

Jinshi is 18 at the start of the story and Maomao is 17 at the start. Not even halfway through the first ten episodes ten months have passed since she started working at the palace and the next few episodes have more months pass, so when “Jinish’s” real age being 19 is mentioned a whole year has passed.

Because she was forced by her parents, and originally was going to be the previous Emperor concubine, who INDEED WAS a pervert. The youngest concubine is kept in the palace because she was the previous emperor's concubine. That man likes very VERY young girls, and when he died, the now Emperor married her, but never visited her. She is a favorite in name, not in acts, which is overall kind because being a favorite grants her good quality services and protection

SPOILERS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jinshi is older than XiaoMao by a year. It was deliberately spread that he is older as part of his undercover work at the rear palace. Consort Lishu, on the hand, was technically the previous emperor’s concubine (he’s into kids, unfortunately). The current emperor cares for Lishu like a sister and wants to protect her by having her re-enter as a concubine. Lishu will undergo several trials, but in the Light Novels, she’s on the path of finding her destiny, and (possibly) a true relationship.

The 14 year old is from the previous Emperors harem, he died before doing anything with her and the current Emperor is said to resent his fathers interest in very young girls and hasn't touched her and probably won't ever try until shes older

in ancient China it was common to have very young concubines and a harem like this. it was a political game after all. but the emperor doesn’t actually want to lay a finger on the minor concubines so don’t worry. unlike the past emperor, who was disgusting. he was the reason why lishu (9 when she came go the palace) ended up there in the first place
