That subtle "Silent Night" at 3:37 is a nice little nod to how Tom would bookend Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis with that song
OH MY GOD. 73 years old now, my thoughts as a soldier of 18 years old when in Vietnam. My 19th and 21st birthdays in Vietnam. That boy, where did he go? crying, for all of us, for me, for the farewell to our youth. prayers for all who suffered and those who still suffer from the Second Indochina War, our Vietnam War.
this cover is so beauitful, phoebe never disappoints <3
Bridgers/Waits the perfect combination. No one writes melancholy like Tom. And the sparseness and beauty of this song is perfect for Phoebe's voice. Just perfect.
I am not fighting, for justice I am not fighting, for freedom I am fighting, for my life And another day in the world here 21 months of non-stop service as an essential worker have made these words resonate deeply.
The hope and the hopelessness are so close beneath the skin on this recording. What a connection by everyone involved. My heart soars and breaks simultaneously. Just some of the best music ever created.
This song feels like a bleak dry winter day where the trees are bare and the sky is gray. I love it
I think the beautiful thing about covering artists like tom waits who dont necessarily have the most accessible vocal style is that covering them makes them accessible. You have someone listen to tom waits cold turkey more than likely his vocals are going to distract them from his lyrics. But by having a cover like this you have an accessible voice that allows them to focus on the lyrics and then they go "oh my god these lyrics are god tier! I need to check out tom waits!" So now they're paying attention to tom's lyrics instead of getting distracted by his voice.

I love Phoebe Bridgers' music, I love the whole way she expresses herself musically. i listen to your music all day and your music gives me so much more ... thank you ... thank you very much for your music ... and please don't stop
I am in no way a person that relates to the narrator here, but this song still makes me feel so deeply for them and people in general
I've always thought her voice and style are perfect for covering Tom Waits songs. Her cover of Georgia Lee is beautiful.
A hard song to cover, especially considering the very strong male perspective, but she nails it. The song stands out for the reason all of her original songs stand out: it's performed with meaning. This isn't art by committee, as is the case with most major artists. It's empathy, it's love, it's honesty. Beautiful.
Two years ago our daughter was born and the Come On Up To The House: Women Sing Waits album came out. I remember rocking my girl to sleep while Phoebe sang "Georgia Lee." Now she comes out with this gorgeous version of this song less than 2 months from when our son is due. It feels like serendipity.
Love phoebe
Tom Waits is an unmatched lyricist, the essence of Americana
A song that captures a moment in time. I will now never forget the feel of December 21, 2021 because of this amazing version. Amazing.
No other song makes me immediately cry like this one
"I still believe that there is gold at the end of the world" "Then I will come home [...] And it is so cold and it is so hard here" I think this resonates with me the most.
