This is my experience from two snorkeling sessions at the sunken Mala Wharf artificial reef near Lahaina on the island of Maui. I would say this snorkeling experience was the best of my life due to the awesome jumbled concrete reef, the quantity of fish, and seeing active whitetip reef sharks. The depth of the reef is from 10-30 feet and is great for snorkeling or SCUBA diving. If you want to see active sharks then an evening/night session is your best bet since white tip reef sharks tend to be active at night. The sharks were sleeping under pillars during the my mid-day session.
