The Wreck of IJN Akagi - Japan's Ruined Carrier of Midway

For today's video, we'll be returning to the wrecks of Midway. To the one discovered wreck I haven't covered in any detail, to this point. Akagi, the final one to be discovered...by a couple days. This carrier is most well known for Richard Best's hit that crippled her. And the resulting dramatization of it, in film and print.

Akagi would burn through the night of June 4th, 1942, before being scuttled early on June 5th. And promptly lost to time, until finally discovered in 2019 by RV Petrel. Alas, Petrel couldn't do an ROV survey at the time.

Akagi would have to wait for 2023 and Nautilus, who gave her an extensive survey. Which found several interesting things, from her broadly intact island, to intact wood on the flight deck. She's not the most famous Japanese shipwreck...but she's certainly one of the more interesting.
